Kayla & Justin’s Engagement Session – Love & A Vintage Picnic

What does a photographer do when she falls in love with her couple and her brides best friend at the first meeting…she makes sure that they darn well hire her!! Kayla came into the studio with a very specific vision. I love when my clients know what the want because we can put our heads together and come up with an amazing shoot……and that is exactly what we did. Between the three of us we came together with some amazing vintage props and galavanted around Fish Creek Park laughing and having a great time. Kayla collected items from her Granny of which I just love!! Check out the old bible!! It’s amazing!!

I wish their wedding was tomorrow…I truly do!! Kayla and Justin are absolute gems. Not only do they live just around the corner, they both love photography as much as we do!! That my friend makes for a good shoot! July 18, 2015 needs to COME QUICK!!!

Here are a few words from my amazing couple!

ps: Kayla…..I did get a good shot of the deer after all!!! xoxo

When is the big day?

July 18th 2015
How did you meet?
We met briefly several times through mutual friends. It wasn’t until we sat down together at a group dinner in December of 2012 that we were really able to get to know one another. After that we didn’t talk for 2 weeks until the New Year. We started messaging each other a lot, and then up set 2 dates to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I found it hard to believe that a guy hadn’t seen it yet, I was determined to get him to like it. I guess it worked!!

When you met what was the first thing you noticed about him/her?
Kayla: Justin has this big goofy grin, it always seems to make me laugh. He also has a big heart, his family means everything to him, and that was really important to me.
Justin: The first thing I noticed about Kayla was her big blue eyes….They’re absolutely stunning, and something I couldn’t miss.

How did he Propose?

Justin came down to Phoenix to visit me for Easter this past April while I was there with extended family. The day of the proposal we had spent the day hanging out with my younger cousin while his parents were out with friends. After I had put my cousin to bed, I found Justin on the couch playing a game on his phone, so I sat down beside him. Within minutes, he jumped up and briskly walked out the patio door. The house is on a wash in the desert, so it’s prone to scorpions. I was scared that Justin was going to get stung by one because I thought he was barefoot, and didn’t have a black light to be able to see them in the dark. So I ran to our room to grab my shoes, and headed out the door behind him. Little did I know, he was trying to set up his phone to record the proposal as well as place the ring on a nearby rock (he had tried to set it up earlier, but was afraid that a desert creature would pick up the shiny object, so he brought it back inside). I came out demanding that he put shoes on, before I knew it, he was distracting me with the flashlight saying he found something! At first I thought he was pointing to a scorpion, after a few seconds of my brain processing what he was pointing to, I realized it was an engagement ring & immediately began crying when he picked it up and got down on one knee. It didn’t go according to his exact plan (because I came out too soon), but it was perfect nonetheless! Arizona has a special place in our hearts. When we first met, I had gone down to Arizona, and he didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity, so he drove down from Calgary to Phoenix in the middle of winter to ask me out officially! So it was even sweeter to have him propose in one of my favourite places!

What do you love about each other?

Kayla: I love that Justin is always willing to help someone out, even if he doesn’t really know the person, or if he already has a million things on his plate. He’s always eager to lend a hand to my dad or brother when they are doing guy stuff. Right now he is helping my grandfather with selling something on kijiji. Justin is also amazing with the special needs boy that I care for. I couldn’t ask for a better person to become best friends with someone who means so much to me. Justin loves to have Logan around at our house, and just generally loves to spend time with him. He is patient, kind, and understands why I love what I do. I think that has been really important in our relationship.

Justin: I adore Kayla’s fun loving demeanour. She is always up for a good time, and never fails to put a smile on my face. She’s a very caring and selfless person, who is constantly looking to help out; which ranges from bringing me meals when I’m stuck in the office, to reminding me to grab my keys or other necessary items on my way out the door. It’s amazing what a guy forgets at 5:45 am!! Family is very important to Kayla, which is something I always admired with her as well. Lastly, the love she has for her job, and the young boy and family she looks after, has truly left a lasting impression on me.

Favourite hangout?
We are happiest when we are together with those that we love. We like to be in each other’s company, whether that is relaxing on the couch watching a movie in our new home, being with family and friends, or hanging out with Logan in one of his favourite places, which currently seems to be our house.

Favourite thing to do together?

Go for car rides in fun cars whichever they may be! Justin has a passion for cars, that was one of the first things that intrigued me about him. I love cars too, I may not know a lot about them, but I love that he teaches me the makes and models, and what year they probably are. We also really like to go to car shows/auctions together. We bought a trailer last summer, and we like to camp. We are looking forward to eventually getting out to use it more!

What are you looking forward to the most on your big day?

Kayla: I’m excited to celebrate with my friends and family, they all love Justin so it’s going to be great to celebrate my love for him with everyone else! I am beyond excited to put my wedding dress on, and finally be able to show Justin. I think it will be my best kept secret!
